  1. Edward Beynon: probably the younger brother of George Beynon who died of his wounds in 1918. If so Edward was born around 1897 to George and Marian Beynon in Kimberley, South Africa. Marian’s address in 1927 was Rosebank, Dillwyn Road, Sketty.
  2. John Brown: born 1895/96 in Hull, Yorkshire, oldest son of James and Emma Brown. In 1911 he was living with his parents aged 49 and 45 at 16 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty along with his brothers Eli and James and his sister Emmeline May, and 3 adult boarders. John was an errand boy while his father was described as a general labourer from the village of Clapham in Somerset. His mother originated from Ipswich in Suffolk. Two of the children were born in Yorkshire and the younger pair in Bristol. His parents had been married for 22 years. The family came to Swansea sometime after 1905.
  3. Eli Brown: born 1900/01 in Stockbridge, Yorkshire, second son of James & Emma Brown and younger brother of John, living at home at 16 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty (see 2 above). Eli was at school in 1911.
  4. William Brown: born 1900 in Swansea, William John Brown was the younger of two sons of Charles and Elizabeth Brown. In 1911 he was living with his parents aged 55 and 52, elder brother and 2 boarders at 58 Oxford Street, Swansea. His occupation was greengrocer while those of his parents were sailmaker and dressmaker respectively. His father came from Liverpool but his mother was from Swansea and the family had lived in Swansea for at least 23 years. During the 29 years of his parents’ marriage two other children had died.
  5. Charles Brown: born 1887 In Swansea, Ernest Charles Brown was the elder of the two sons of Charles and Elizabeth Brown, living at home at 58 Oxford Street, Swansea (see 4 above), and working as a butcher.
  6. Kenneth Coates: born 1894 in Madeley, Shropshire, Kenneth was the only son living at home of Walter and Margaret Coates. In 1911 the family was living at 33 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty, and Kenneth was a clerk in a firm of upholsterers. His father was a retired grocer from Charlgrove in Oxfordshire and his mother originated from Pembroke Dock. His parents, aged 55 and 51, had been married for 26 years.
  7. Thomas Dunn: born 1892 in Swansea St. Mary’s, Thomas W. was the oldest of 3 sons of Samuel and Nina (Angelina) Dunn. In 1911 Thomas was living with his parents aged 43 and 48 at 1 Eversley Road, Sketty, together with his two brothers, sister, and two boarders. His father, who came from Tawstock in north Devon, owned a firm of haulage contractors, Dunn & Son, and Thomas was employed in the firm. His mother was from Swansea St. John’s and had been married for 19 years. The family had lived in Swansea for 20 years.
  8. John Dunn: born about 1898 in Marwood near Barnstaple, Devon, John was the second oldest of 3 sons of Samuel and Nina Dunn. In 1911 he was also living at home at 1 Eversley Road, Sketty with his family and was at school (see 7 above & 9 below).
  9. Sidney Dunn: born 1899/1900 in Marwood near Barnstaple, Devon, Sidney was the youngest of 3 sons of Samuel and Nina Dunn (see 7 & 8 above). In 1911 he was living at home at 1 Eversley Road, Sketty with his family and was at school.
  10. Thomas Evans: born 1890/91 in Sketty, Thomas was the younger brother of Richard Evans who was killed while serving with the Canadian Forces. Thomas was one of 8 children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Evans who lived in 1 Prospect Place, Sketty in 1901 and at Caebank, Sketty in 1911. His father was a copper smelter while Thomas worked as a copper mill worker in 1911.
  11. Harry Edwards: born 1891 in Swansea, Harry or Henry as he was registered, was the oldest of 3 sons of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Edwards. In 1911 Harry was living with his parents aged 45 and 47, brothers, sister and brother in law at 16 Margaret Terrace, Sketty. Harry and his entire family had been born in Swansea. His father was a jobbing gardener working for himself, while Harry was an upholsterer. His parents had been married for 22 years.
  12. William Edwards: born 1892/93 in Swansea, William was the second son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Edwards (see 11 above). In 1911 he was living at home at 16 Margaret Terrace, Sketty and was a domestic gardener.
  13. Walter Edwards: born 1894 in Swansea, Walter was the third and youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Edwards (see 11 and 12 above). In 1911 he was living at home at 16 Margaret Terrace, Sketty. He was an apprentice.
  14. Ivor Edwards: born 1889 in Swansea, Ivor was a boarder in the house of his married sister and brother in law, Mary Ann and Alexander George, together with 2 nieces and 2 nephews, at 13 Kimberley Road, Sketty. He worked as an iron moulder in a fuel works in 1911. During the War he served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers.
  15. Harry Ford: born 1887 in Sketty, Swansea, Harry or Harold Henry as he was registered, had been married for less than one year in 1911 to Margaret Emily, and was living with his wife at 17 Vivian Road, Sketty. Harry was a colliery office clerk. Both he and his wife were born in Swansea. During the War Harry became a Sergeant in the Welsh Guards.
  16. Trevor Ford: born 1895 in Sketty, Swansea, Trevor was the youngest child of Charles and Ada Mary Ford. In 1911 he was still at school and living with his widowed father aged 57 and three older sisters at Rose Villa, Sketty. His father was a self-employed market gardener, originally from Gloucestershire, but had lived in Swansea for at least 26 years. Trevor was captured and held as a prisoner of war in a camp in Munster, Germany. “Everyone in Sketty, and especially his co-worshippers at the Wesleyan Church, is delighted to hear that Trevor Ford, after being a prisoner in Germany almost from the beginning of the War, has arrived safely at his home in Kimberley Road.” Cambrian Daily Leader 10112118.
  17. Fred Gordon: born 1892 In Swansea, Frederick was already enlisted in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman in 1911, based at Devonport. His widowed mother, Sarah, originally from Hayle in Cornwall, lived alone in 5 Cory Street, Sketty in 1911 and later in 1915 at 2 Ivor Place, Sketty. When Fred was living at home in 1901, the family were living at 18 Roseland Terrace, Sketty. Fred’s father, George Harris Gordon, a domestic gardener from Oystermouth, had died in 1898. His older brother by 3 years, William Gordon, was one of the 10 men on the Roll of Honour who was killed.
  18. Arthur George: bornl891 in Swansea, Arthur was the oldest of five sons still living at home. His parents, who both came from Swansea, were John and Elizabeth George, both aged 43, and he lived with 4 brothers and 2 sisters at 15 Margaret Terrace, Sketty in 1911, next door to the Edwards brothers (see 11, 12 & 13). His father was a mason and Arthur worked as a packer in a wholesale grocery warehouse.
  19. Wilfred George: born 1895 in Swansea, Wilfred was a younger brother of Arthur (see 18 above) and lived at home with his parents, brothers and sisters at 15 Margaret Terrace, Sketty. He was a domestic gardener in 1911.
  20. Robert Gamon: born 1898 in Swansea, Robert S. was the eldest of two Sons of William and Amelia Gamon, both aged 37. He lived at home with his parents, brother and sister at 77 Townhlll Road, Sketty in 1911. His father, who came originally from Barnstaple in Devon, was a domestic gardener. His mother came from Devonport in Devon and had been married for 13 years. The family had lived in Swansea for at least 12 years.
  21. Fred Hansford: born 1893 In Swansea, Frederick Maurice Hansford was the only child of William and Eunice Hansford, aged 47 and 43, and who had been married for 18 years. Both Frederick and his father were hairdressers. His father came from Wincanton in Somerset and his mother from Bath, Somerset at least 17 years previous to 1911. Fred lived at home with his parents and his maternal grandmother, aged 82, at 34 Sketty Avenue, Sketty.
  22. James Hanson: born 1901 in Swansea, James was the oldest of five children of Charles and Mary Hanson, aged 38 and 35, who had been married for 10 years. Charles was from the Mumbles and worked as a boatman for the Swansea Harbour Trust, while his mother was from Swansea. In 1911, the family lived at 19 Coedsaeson Crescent and James was still at school.
  23. Thomas Hanson: born 1892 in Swansea, Thomas James was the oldest child in a large family of 10, all of whom were living at home in 1911 at 6 Grafog Terrace, Danygraig Swansea. His parents were William James and Emma Elizabeth Hanson, both aged 43, and like Thomas born in Sketty. His father was a lock gatesman for the Harbour Trust in Swansea and may have moved to Danygraig to be closer to his work at least 2 years previously. Thomas also worked for the Harbour Trust as a fitter’s labourer.

  26. Thomas James: born 1896/97 in Skewen, Thomas was living in the house of his uncle and aunt, Jacob and Anne Gunston, at 12 Frogmore Avenue, Sketty. He was a cartman for his uncle’s coal merchant business in 1911. Also in the house was his cousin David Gunston, a cartman like Thomas, who served in the War and was killed.

  30. Wallace Jones: born 1895 in Sketty, Wallace Thomas Jones was the eldest son in a family of 3 children living at 60 Fleet Street, Swansea. Wallace worked as a builder’s labourer in 1911, while his father was a general labourer. His parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Jones, aged 43 and 44 respectively, had been married for 18 years and came from Carmarthen and Bristol originally and had lived in Swansea for at least 15 years, most of that time in Sketty.
  31. John Lamont: although not shown on the 1911 Census for the Lamont family (see 32 & 33) he may have been the oldest child and living away from home.
  32. William Lamont: born 1895 in Govan, Glasgow, William was the oldest of 5 sons and 2 daughters still living at home in the family of William and Elizabeth Lamont at 2 Griffiths Terrace, Townhill Road, Sketty. He was an apprentice metallurgical chemist at the Cwmfelin Steel & Tinplate Works in 1911. William served as a bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery and was wounded in November 1916. His father was a boilermaker and both his parents were Scottish originating from Govan in Glasgow. The family had moved around considerably to places that included Dundee, Wirral and Bilbao in Spain before settling down in Swansea sometime after 1904. One of his younger brothers, Stephen Lamont, was killed in the war.
  33. Harry Lamont: born 1897 in Birkenhead, Harry was the third of the 5 sons of William and Elizabeth Lamont, living at 2 Griffiths Terrace, Townhill Road, Sketty (see 32). Harry was still at school in 1911, not leaving until 1914. Harry also served in the Royal Field Artillery.
  34. Arthur Mansel(l): born 1883 in Cockett parish, Swansea, Arthur Lionel Mansell had been married for eighteen months in 1911 to Bella, and they had a four month old child. They lived at 17 Tycoch Road, Sketty and Arthur worked as a carpenter and joiner in the building industry. His parents, who lived at 1 Kimberley Road, Sketty, were William John and Elizabeth Mansell, from Swansea and near Barnstaple, Devon, respectively. His father, who was aged 65 in 1911, was a mariner.

  36. Lawrence Morgan: born 1900 in Swansea, Lawrence was the third oldest child of 5 children born to John and Amelia Morgan of 21 Sketty Avenue, Sketty. His parents, aged 44 and 43, were from Swansea and had been married for 20 years. His father was an assistant collector of shipping rates working for the Swansea Harbour Board. Lawrence was still at school in 1911.
  37. Idris Morgan: born 1900 in Fulham, west London, Idris was the oldest of 5 children including 4 sons born to Gildas and Sarah Morgan. His parents were born in Bettws, Carmarthenshire, and Llanguicke in the Swansea Valley and were aged 34 and 37 respectively and had been married for 11 years in 1911. They had been living in Swansea from around 1907 and in 1911 were at 17 Harry Street, Sketty. His father was a cabinet maker who had worked in London for at least 5 years. Idris was at school in 1911.
  38. Fred Manley: born 1896 in Swansea, Frederick J. Manley was the oldest son in a family of 9 children living at home at 30 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty. His parents, Frederick and Margaret Manley were both from Swansea and both were aged 42 and had been married for 21 years in 1911. His father worked as a collector for a coal merchant while Fred was an apprentice to a cycle maker.
  39. Leonard Manley: born 1897 in Swansea, Leonard James Manley was the second oldest son in the family of Frederick and Margaret that included 5 daughters. Leonard was also living at home at 30 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty but was still at school in 1911 (see 38).
  40. Harry Muxworthy: born 1898 in Swansea, William Henry Muxworthy was the oldest of 5 children, all sons, of William John and Gertrude Muxworthy. The family lived at 29 Coedsaeson Crescent, Sketty in 1911. His parents, aged 41 and 36, both came from Swansea and had been married for 14 years. His father was a domestic coachman and Harry and all his brothers were at school.
  41. George Noyes: born 1880 in Swansea, Joseph George Noyes had been married for 2 years with no children but shown in the Census of 1911 as living alone, aged 31. His wife, Alice, was shown in 1911 as being a visitor at an address in Bristol, and re-married in 1920. George had been married to Alice in June 1908 at St. James’ Church in the Uplands. He was a boot maker and repairer living at 81 Terrace Road, Swansea. He was the oldest person listed on the Church Roll Call. His parents, Robert and Elizabeth Noyes, came originally from Wiltshire and Cheshire and his father was a bootmaker living at 101 Rhondda Street, Swansea.
  42. Douglas Pearc(s)e: born in 1882 in Churchill, Oxfordshire, Douglas had been married to Ida for 5 years and had two children. They were married in August 1905 in Coity, Bridgend. The family lived at 15 Tycoch Road, Sketty, and Douglas worked as an assurance superintendent for the Irish Assurance Society.
  43. Harry Radford: born 1897 in Swansea, George Henry Radford was the only living son in the family of 3 children of James Henry and Susan Radford. His parents were born in Devonport and Bideford in Devon but had lived in Swansea for at least 17 of their 22 years married. In 1911 his father was a dock labourer while Harry was still at school and the family was living at 9 Vivian Road, Sketty.
  44. Margaret Radford: born 1902 in Swansea, Margaret Radford was one of only two women listed on the Church Roll Call. She was the youngest of the 3 children still living of James Henry and Susan Radford and sister to Harry (see 43 above). Also still at school in 1911, Margaret lived with her parents and siblings at 9 Vivian Road, Sketty.
  45. William Rees: born 1893 in Swansea, William Richard was the oldest son and second oldest child of 10 children born to George and Lily Rees, living at 10 Vivian Road, Sketty in 1911. William worked as a mason’s helper in the building industry like his father, who was a house joiner. His parents were from Swansea, Sketty and Killay, and had been married for 20 years.
  46. Walter Rowland(s): born 1891 in Westerham, Kent, David Walter Rowland was the eldest of 2 sons and 2 daughters in the family of David and Rachel Rowland living at 2 Penyrheol Terrace, Sketty in 1911. Walter worked as a brewer’s storeman and his father was a domestic gardener although while in Kent he worked as a domestic coachman. Walter’s parents were both born in Sketty and had been married for 21 years. Three children including Walter and his brother William were born in Kent, while the youngest child was born in Sketty, indicating that the parents had moved to Kent for work and returned to Sketty by 1900.
  47. William Rowland(s): born in 1892in Westerham, Kent, William Lewis Rowland was the younger of 2 sons of David and Rachel Rowland, living at 2 Penyrheol Terrace, Sketty (see 46 above). William worked as a nurseryman in 1911.
  48. Cyril Sanders: born 1891 in Fremington near Barnstaple, north Devon, Cyril Hugh Sanders was the younger of 2 sons of Abel and Sarah Sanders who came from villages close to Barnstaple in north Devon and were married in 1890 in Taunton. Like his father, Cyril was a blacksmith. In 1911 the family lived at 4 Park Place, Sketty.
  49. Guy Sanders: born 1890 in Fremington near Barnstaple, north Devon, Cecil Guy Sanders was the older of two brothers born to Abel and Sarah Sanders (see 48 above). Guy worked as a Post Office clerk in 1911 and lived at home at 4 Park Place, Sketty.
  50. Arthur Slingsby: born 1887 in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, William Arthur L Slingsby was the only child of George and Rhoda Slingsby, both of whom came from Pudsey in the West Riding of Yorkshire and who were married in Pudsey in 1886. They were aged 51 and 50 respectively in 1911. Arthur was a carpenter while his father worked as a copper mill fitter. Arthur lived at home at 12 Margaret Terrace, Sketty. In 1901 the family lived in Morecambe, Lancashire, where George was a woollen mill overlooker.
  51. Edwin Thomas: born 1892 in Swansea, Edwin Arthur Thomas was the youngest son of Leor and Esther Thomas, both aged 40, who came originally from Haverfordwest. His father was a park labourer. By 1911 Edwin had left home and was living with his cousins, John and Hannah Howells, at 1 Llewellyn Street, Sketty. Aged 18, he worked at a colliery as a coal hewer.
  52. Idris Vaughan: born 1899 in Borth, Cardiganshire, Idris Vaughan was the youngest son of Catherine Vaughan and was living with his mother and siblings at Borth in 1901. By 1911, he was boarding at 1 Llewellyn Street, Sketty, and still at school, in the house of his aunt and uncle, Leor and Esther Thomas. His cousin Edwin Thomas was also boarding in the house (see 51 above).
  53. William Vine: born 1880 in Eastbourne, Sussex, William Henry Vine was a son of John and Caroline Vine, a family living in Eastbourne. By 1901, William had enlisted in the army and was in barracks at Cheriton in Kent. By 1911 he was living in Swansea, boarding in a widow’s household in Waunarlwydd Road, Cockett, and working as a labourer in a coal mine.
  54. Arthur Warren: born 1901 in Swansea, Arthur Llewellyn Warren was the eldest of two sons of Arthur Edward and Catherine Warren, both aged 44, from Swimbridge, north Devon, and Swansea respectively. His father was a market gardener and the family lived at Chorlton, Carnglas Road, Sketty in 1911. Arthur was still at school.

  1. George Rees (Bethel): born 1894/95 in Sketty, George was the second of 3 sons of John Henry and Margaret Rees, living at 4 Llewellyn Street, Sketty in 1911. His father was a mill-wright while George worked as a grocer’s assistant.
  2. David Lilley (Bethel): born 1881 in Swansea, David Llewellyn Lilley married Alice Morgan in 1905 and had 3 young children by 1911. He worked as a dock labourer for Swansea Harbour Trust and lived at 4 Bryngoleu Terrace, Sketty. His parents were James and Martha Lilley from Swansea.
  3. Charles Hearne (Bethel): born 1887/88 in Swansea, Charles was the oldest son of Thomas and Martha. In 1911 he worked as a commercial clerk in copper works and was living at home with his widowed father and siblings at 122 Milton Terrace, Swansea.
  4. David Waters: born 1890 in Sketty, Swansea, David was the oldest son still living in 1911 of William and Rebecca. The family lived at Penyrheol, Sketty and David worked as a lampman at a colliery. His mother is shown as having given birth to 17 children in 25 years of marriage, of whom 8 had died before 1911.
  5. Percy Huxtable: born 1891 in Instow, north Devon, Walter Percy Huxtable was a waggoner on a farm, living as a boarder at Tower Cottage, Blackpill in 1911. His parents were Thomas and Susanna, both from north Devon.
  6. William Mitchell: born 1890/91 in Moorgate, London, William was a boarder in 1911 in a house at 41 Vivian Road, Sketty, working as a labourer for a public works contractor.

  8. Alfred Palmer: born 1893 in Blackpill, Swansea, Alfred Miles Palmer was one of three brothers (see 9 & 10 below) who served in the war. His parents, Samuel and Sarah Jane, had 11 children, 9 of whom were alive in 1911. The family lived at 3 Harry Street, Sketty. Alfred was a seaman in the Royal Navy and his father, originally from Norfolk, worked as a jobbing gardener in 1911.
  9. Sidney Palmer: born 1905 in Brynmill, Swansea, Ernest Sidney Palmer was the youngest of the 3 brothers of Samuel and Sarah Jane who served in the War (see 8 above). He lived with his family at 3 Harry Street, Sketty, and was at school in 1911.
  10. Bert Palmer: born 1897 in Leslie terrace, Everard Bertie Palmer, was the second of the 3 sons of Samuel and Sarah Jane who served in the War (see 8 & 9 above). He lived with his family at 3 Harry Street, Sketty, and was at school in 1911.
  11. W.J. Howells: possibly William James Howells, born 1898, and living at Dinas Street, Plasmarl.
  12. George Merriman: born 1896 in Swansea, George Merriman was living with his parents and grandparents at 17 Park Place, Brynmill in 1901, and by 1911 was working as a farm servant at Martin Hill, Templeton in Pembrokeshire. He may have returned to Swansea either to work or to enlist.
  13. George Colman: born 1888 in Swansea, George was the oldest of 4 sons of George and Ellen Colman, both originating on Gower. The family was living on Gower Road, Sketty in 1901 when his father was a domestic gardener.
  14. A. Vine: this may have been William Vine (see 53 above). There is no record of any other Vine in the Swansea area in 1911.

  16. Alfred Seldon: born 1896 in Swansea, Horace Alfred Seldon was the eldest son of Joseph and Mary Seldon living at Carnglas Terrace, Sketty in 1901. His parents were originally from Devon and his father worked as a road labourer. In 1911 the family were living at 1 Tycoch Road, Sketty and Alfred worked underground in a coal mine, clearing coal.
